The Portsmouth-based type 23 frigate HMS Iron Duke has returned to the sea for months of trials following a major upgrade. The ship is the first Royal Navy vessel to be fitted with Artisan, which is one of the most advanced radar systems in the world.
The 3D radar is five times more powerful than the system it replaces. Artisan will eventually be rolled out to all the Navy’s 13 Type 23s as well as the two future aircraft carriers, in a £100m naval programme.
