New Zealand minesweeper from the period of World War II , one of the thirteen built units of type Castle . The ship was launched on July 20, 1943 at the Seager shipyard in Auckland , and entered the Royal New Zealand Navy in April 1944. The unit was withdrawn from service in 1946.The artillery armament consisted of a single 12-pounder 76 mm (3 in ) QF HA L / 40 universal gun . The small-caliber anti-aircraft weapon was a single 20 mm L / 70 Oerlikon automatic cannon [ . Sea mines were used as anti-mine equipment .
The ship’s crew consisted of 42 officers, non-commissioned officers and sailors .

Tawhai served in the RNZN for only two years, marked with a side mark T348 . It was written from the fleet list in 1946 . After 1947, the unit served in China as a rescue ship under the UN jurisdiction
