The second ship, ‘Anthem of the Seas’, in the new Quantum class will become the most technologically advanced cruise ship ever to be based in Europe, when it is launched in spring 2015, say owners Royal Caribbean International. The ship’s first homeport will be Southampton, UK.

The name of the first home port for the 4,108-guest double occupancy Anthem of the Seas – currently being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany – was revealed at an exclusive event for media and special guests at the Heron Tower in London, UK.

“Our business has a long history with the port of Southampton, and over the last ten years we have annually increased the number of cruise opportunities from the port,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “We are now eyeing more growth with the introduction of Anthem of the Seas to the UK market in spring 2015. Our commitment to providing unrivalled holiday experiences onboard the world’s most advanced and activity-packed ships is unwavering.”

The Quantum class of ships will take a dramatic leap forward, introducing more game-changing “firsts at sea” such as a skydiving experience and the ‘North Star’, an engineering marvel featuring a jewel like capsule that extends 300 feet above the ocean and over the sides of the ship to deliver 360-degree views for guests (see picture).

Italian Ship Holds Replenisment at Sea

In the early morning of Tuesday 19 November, EU Naval Force warship ITS Libeccio carried out a replenishment at sea (RAS) with the American auxiliary ship, USNS Arctic.

The RAS, which was conducted in coordination with the US Fast Combat Support Ship, required the two ships to sail very close together so that the fuel lines could be passed, so a lot of preparation and vigilance was required by both crews prior to, and during the RAS.

At the end of the RAS, ITS Libeccio returned to her counter piracy patrols in the pirate high risk area off the Somali coast.

USS Abraham Lincoln Progressing in Rebuilding Berthing Spaces

Sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) PM 11′s berthing team are beginning the rebuilding process by overhauling spaces and bringing in replacement racks Nov. 20.

The PM 11 team, consisting of 31 Sailors, successfully removed more than 1,500 racks from Lincoln spaces prior to the carrier’s arrival at Newport News Shipbuilding. During the last year, Lincoln Sailors have modernized the berthing spaces by sanding, painting and installing new decks and racks to eventually get the carrier ready to move the crew aboard.

“I have been here since March and the progress the berthing team has made has been amazing,” said Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Terrence Parks, berthing rehabilitation team leading chief petty officer. “Having Sailors from other departments temporarily assigned to the berthing crew not only allows us to work faster and more efficiently, but it also gives the ability to every Sailor on the ship to help contribute to getting the Lincoln back out to the fleet.”

The berthing team, led by Weapons department, started in November 2012, and after only seven months they were able to have all 37 berthing areas gutted, prepped and ready to begin the modernization.

The rehabilitation of the berthing areas is planned in three distinct phases. The first phase consisted of completely cleaning the berthing areas. The second phase involves preparing the spaces for painting. The last phase will consist of installing new furniture, new racks, lockers and laundry bins.

“Currently all 37 spaces have completed the first phase, while 10 spaces have completed phase two and are awaiting phase three,” said Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Michael Mock, assistant berthing production leading chief petty officer. “We have three or four more spaces that have been started on phase two.”

Lincoln is currently undergoing refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.

Lincoln is the fifth ship of the Nimitz class to undergo an RCOH, a major life-cycle milestone. Once RCOH is complete, Lincoln will be one of the most modern and technologically advanced Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the fleet and will continue to be a vital part of the nation’s defense.

US Navy Tests Its Oil Spill Response Skills

The U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) participated in an underway oil spill response exercise with USNS Catawba (T-ATF-168) in Bahraini waters, Nov. 6-10.

The exercise was held to test the Navy’s capability to respond to an emergent oil spill from a U.S. Navy ship. SUPSALV maintains and regularly exercises salvage and oil spill response equipment stored at bases around the world.

“Part of the SUPSALV mission is to provide in theater mission response to 5th Fleet within 48 hours of notification,” said Mike Dean, SUPSALV deputy director. “This training exercised our capabilities to respond to major near-shore and off-shore oil spills.”

During the exercise, a deep water oil containment boom with a 5,000 pound mooring system was deployed and recovered to and from Catawba.

A skimming system was also utilized as part of the exercise. The system consists of a specially designed inflatable collection mechanism coupled with a hydraulically operated skimmer that pumps collected oil into a containment bladder.

Other participants in the exercise were 5th Fleet, the Bahraini Coast Guard and elements from Navy Region Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia.

The Office of the Director of Ocean Engineering, Supervisor of Salvage and Diving is part of the Naval Sea Systems Command and is responsible for all aspects of ocean engineering, including diving, salvage, in-water ship repair, towing and heavy lift, and open ocean oil and hazardous material spill response.
