A Lower Hutt wharf, popular with recreational fishermen for almost 25 years, has been closed to the public for demolition work.

The Point Howard T Wharf was used until 1989, when the last small tanker berthed there.

The wharf is between the Seaview Marina and the Seaview Tanker Terminal on the coast road between Petone and Eastbourne.

Hutt City Council reserves manager Craig Cottrill said $450,000 had been budgeted for the project and work, which began in early October, was on target to be completed by Christmas.

Hutt City was responsible for maintaining and owning four wharves Petone, Point Howard, Days Bay and Eastbourne.

The photo, above, of a ship berthed at the old wharf, supplied by Wellington Harbourmaster Mike Pryce, is of the old Texas Company vessel, Australia, on a visit to Wellington in 1930.

Mr Cottrill said once demolition work on the outer tees at Point Howard had been completed there will be seating provided along the wharf to make the area more inviting and appealing to recreational fishermen and visitors.

Mr Cottrill emphasised that the Point Howard T wharf was completely separate from the Seaview tanker terminal.

China’s nuclear-powered ballistic submarine is capable of conducting combat patrol missions around the Second Island Chain, according to military expert Li Li in an interview with the Party-run People’s Daily online.

The Second Island Chain extends from Honshu on the Japanese island chain southward to New Guinea.

Only a few nations around the world are able to construct their own ballistic submarines because of the sheer difficulty, said Li. Larger pressurized water reactors are suitable for surface combat vessels, but cannot be used for submarines. It is extremely difficult for most nations around the world to build a properly sized pressurized water reactor in their submarines. Then there is building a nuclear reactor.

The PLA Navy have solved these major problems through years of development. The earlier Chinese submarines designed during the Cold War were small, noisy and had a short attack range. China’s new generation Type 094 Jin-class submarines are able to reach the Second Island Chain. Equipped with 16 JL-2 missiles, their attack range extends 8,000km.

The JL-2 could hit Los Angeles from the waters east of the Kurile islands in the northern Pacific, Peter Howarth points out in his work China’s Rising Sea Power: The Pla Navy’s Submarine Challenge. When launched from the East China Sea, the JL-2 can reach Guam, Hawaii and Alaska. The JL-2 intercontinental submarine-launched ballistic missiles can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead, posing a considerable threat to US national security.

A ROYAL Navy frigate has embarked upon her final voyage to a scrapyard in Swansea.

HMS Cornwall will be dismantled and recycled by Swansea Drydocks Ltd.

The Type-22 frigate, built in 1985 and commissioned in Falmouth in 1988 by Diana, Princess of Wales, was being towed from Portsmouth, Hampshire, yesterday morning.

The 5,300-tonne vessel is the only one of her class being broken in the UK.

Her sister ships Chatham, Campbeltown and Cumberland were sold to a recycling premises in Turkey — the same scrapyard which bought the Ark Royal aircraft carrier .

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the sale of the four frigates raised just under £3 million.

In August this year, jubilant Swansea Drydocks bosses said they had beaten competitors to win the HMS Cornwall contract.

Managing director Karl Dunn said at the time: “It has taken us several years of hard work and significant investment to be in a position to win this tender.

“Developing Swansea Drydocks into a world-class ship repair and recycling facility has been a huge challenge.” The dismantling contract is expected to create 20 to 25 jobs at the city’s dry docks-based premises.

The company also repairs and refurbishes ships.

An MoD spokesman said this month: “Following competitions, two contracts have been awarded to recycle four former Type-22 frigates (Cumberland, Campbeltown, Chatham and Cornwall).

“A contract for three of the ships has been awarded to the Turkish recycling company Leyal Ship Recycling.

“The contract for the fourth ship (Cornwall) has been awarded to Swansea Drydocks.”

It also said former ice patrol ship HMS Endurance would be scrapped after the cost of repairing the vessel, which flooded off the coast of Chile in 2008, was too great.

The Post contacted Swansea Drydocks to ask when HMS Cornwall was scheduled to arrive, but it declined to comment.
