HMS Brocklesby to Visit Torbay
The Hunt Class Mine Countermeasures Vessel (MCMV) HMS Brocklesby will visit Torbay on Friday (June 21) for the start of a three-day regional engagement programme, and in particular, to support the town’s Armed Forces Day events.
The Royal Navy warship will anchor off the town from 5pm on Friday night before setting sail again late on Sunday afternoon.
In between time, her commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Stuart Yates and his ship’s company have a busy schedule, including:
• A reception and capability demonstration for 50 invited guests and dignitaries
• Involvement in an Armed Forces Covenant Action Plan signing at the Babbacombe Inn
• Taking part in a Veterans and Cadets Parade in honour of Armed Forces Day
• Joining in at the Babbacombe Palm Festival party
• Hosting a Commanding Officer’s Lunch reception on board for invited guests
The highlight of her short stay off Torbay comes on Saturday when, between the hours of 10am and 4pm the ship will be open to tours by the public, a unique opportunity to sample life on board a modern mine-hunter and to talk to the crew about their experiences.
Access is by boat transfer which will be strictly controlled. Tickets are available at a beach pontoon on Oddicombe Beach for the short transit – passengers should note that all transfers are subject to short notice withdrawal and that access will not be suitable for those with restricted mobility.
HMS Brocklesby recently took part in the first Exercise Joint Warrior of 2013, a multi-national exercise held bi-annually in UK waters with allied nations and their armed forces, in company with HMS Hurworth, HMS Pembroke and HMS Grimsby.
HMS Brocklesby is one of eight Hunt-class MCMVs based in Portsmouth.
Built by Vosper Thornycroft from glass re-inforced plastic, she was launched in 1982 and commissioned 13 months later. The third ship to bear the name, she won her most recent battle honours clearing sea-lanes in to Umm Qasr in Iraq during Operation Telic in 2003.

HMS Ledbury, NATO Counterparts Call at Vlore, Albania

HMS Ledbury , NATO Counterparts Call at Vlore, Albania
HMS Ledbury has just completed a visit to the Albanian Port of Vlore in the company of her NATO counterparts. As part of the standing NATO Mine Counter Measure Group 2 – she arrived in port with ITS Crotone of the Italian Navy and TGC Edincick from the Turkish Navy.
The Task Group spent three days alongside liaising with Albanian colleagues in preparation for several exercises they have planned together.
The port call also gave them the opportunity to explore this cultural city.
During their stopover the ship hosted two visits; the first by Commander Andrew Lamb RN, Squadron Commander of the Second Mine Counter Measure Squadron.
The second visit was from Nicholas Cannon OBE, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Albania and his wife.
On departure the Task Group sailed in the company of two Albanian Navy ships, the Oriku and the Archangel.
The enlarged Task Group then conducted manoeuvres in the Bay of Vlore, led by HMS Ledbury.
On reaching open water, the Albanian warship Oriku conducted a Replenishment at Sea with both ITS Crotone and HMS Ledbury.
Commanding Officer of HMS Ledbury, Lt Cdr Justin Hains RN, said:
“I am very proud to have taken part in today’s exercises.
“The Albanian Navy and the City of Vlore have made us feel very welcome here.
“I was delighted to see the high professional standards set by all of the ships involved. This was a great opportunity for our nations to practice working together at sea.”
HMS Ledbury is the British component of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2), joining other mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels from a variety of NATO nations for approximately three months.
The NATO Task Group contributes to maritime security as part of Operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean Sea, in addition to practicing its core role of defeating mines.

HMS Collingwood bombing: 70th anniversary commemorated

The Royal Navy has commemorated the 70th anniversary of a World War II bombing that killed 33 of its young sailors and was initially “hushed up”.
A sleeping hut at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, Hampshire, was hit on 18 June 1943, killing sailors who had joined up a fortnight before.
But victims’ families were initially told the trainees died in an ammunitions accident,
A chapel service has been held to remember the victims.
Relatives of survivors then visited the site where the bomb landed.

‘Wonderful propaganda’

The German bomb struck one of the base’s 36-man sleeping huts in the early hours.
Most of the sailors who died were aged 17 and 18.
HMS Collingwood Association chairman Mike Crowe said: “The bombing at the time was kept hushed up.
“It would have been a wonderful bit of propaganda had the Germans discovered what they had done with just one bomb.”
The bombing was still an unknown story in 1958 when Mr Crowe attended HMS Collingwood.
During the event earlier, a wreath was laid near a tree that was planted for the bombing’s 50th anniversary.
Commander Andy Phenna, executive officer at HMS Collingwood, said: “If we don’t remember the sacrifice our forbearers made we cannot move on to the future.”
