USS Monterey Calebrates Father’s Day

USS Monterey Calebrates Father's Day
The crew of the guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) celebrated Father’s Day while underway in the Persian Gulf (also known as the Arabian Gulf), June 14.
Preparations for the event began over a month earlier when Monterey’s Family Readiness Group (FRG) met to create a banner to send to the ship. On the banner, family members wrote Father’s Day messages, posted pictures and created handprints to send to their loved ones.

“When the banner arrived I opened it up to get the dimensions so that I could find an appropriate place to display it when the time came,” said Master Chief Lawrence Linton, the ship’s command master chief. “It gave me a great feeling knowing that this would lift the spirits of the dads on board the ship. It really makes my day when I can see a huge, genuine smile on a Sailor’s face.”

Yeoman 1st Class James Chaney was excited to see a message from his fiance.

“I was surprised to see her message,” said Chaney. “It took me a moment to find it, but it made me very happy. It’s a great feeling knowing that someone back home cares for you.”

On June 14, the ship’s officers hosted a steel beach picnic for the crew in recognition of Father’s Day. While the wardroom cooked and served barbecued steaks, bratwurst and chicken, members of the crew fished, played games and relaxed.

“The steel beach picnic was a huge success and a great way to show our appreciation to all fathers on board,” said Lt. Andrew Lundgren, the ship’s supply officer. “It was also a great morale boost for the crew. It gave everyone a chance to unwind and take their minds off work.”

Polish Navy Participates in BALTOPS Exercise

Polish Navy Participates in BALTOPS Exercise
The region comes to a crisis and United Nations Security Council is adopting a resolution legitimizing the international group of ships to come into the region and stabilize the situation. This is the basic assumption for the scenario of this year’s BALTOPS exercise.
Eight Polish Navy ships, two helicopters and one patrol aircraft are taking part in BALTOPS 2013 exercise on the Baltic. The Partnership for Peace exercise will last until June 22.
BALTOPS 2013 is the multinational exercise of cooperation between ships, airplanes and helicopters of 10 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the USA. Polish Navy operates with six minesweepers: ORP ‘Goplo’, ORP ‘Mamry’, ORP ‘Wdzydze’, ORP ‘Gardno’, ORP ‘Bukowo’ and ORP ‘Hancza’, submarine ORP ‘Orzel’, two Mi-14 PL anti-submarine helicopters and patrol-reconnaissance airplane Bryza. Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One – SNMCMG1 under Polish command with the flagship ORP ‘Czernicki’ is also a part of this exercise.
Polish forces participating in the exercise BALTOPS 2013 will mainly perform tasks related to the safety of maritime transportation routes. Mi-14 PL helicopter will cooperate with other units to protect maritime forces against the submarines. Minesweepers will be responsible mainly for protecting the main forces and sea lanes of communication against the sea mines. BALTOPS is an annual, international sea exercise designed to enhance interoperability of naval forces of the Partnership for Peace in the Baltic Sea region.

HMS King Alfred Reservists Attend Shipping Festival in Winchester
Proud Naval Reservists from HMS King Alfred, Portsmouth’s Royal Navy Reserve Unit represented the Senior Service on 13 June by leading the Colour Party bearing the White Ensign into Winchester’s Shipping Festival.
Chief Petty Officer Ken Turley, Petty Officer Ian Lane and Leading Hand Miranda Cracknell-Burt led an impressive, colourful array of Ensigns and Standards into the ancient flower-filled cathedral for the annual service of dedication which celebrates and gives thanks to God for the continuing prosperity of the shipping industry and the safety of seafarers.
The Festival’s organisers, Southampton Master Mariners Club were delighted to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to the Winchester cathedral’s special seafarer’s service.
A keen and accomplished sailor The Princess Royal supports numerous maritime organisations.
She is a Master of Trinity House, Patron of the Missions to Seafarers and recently agreed to become a Stowaway of the Master Mariners club based in Southampton.
Commanding Officer of HMS King Alfred, Commander Anthony Stickland RD RNR was present at the Service accompanied by the RNR unit’s Chaplain, Reverend Bernard Clarke.
Cdr Stickland said:
“With the cathedral looking magnificent, bedecked with flowers, the numerous Standard bearers made a wonderful sight, I was very proud that HMS King Alfred’s Naval Reservists were bearing the White Ensign on behalf of the entire Naval Service.
“Winchester has a deep history associated with the Saxon King Alfred so it is entirely appropriate that HMS King Alfred was there to support this important dedication in Winchester, the ancient capital city of England and county town of Hampshire.”
Two other members of the Royal Naval Reserve were also present, Captain Nigel Bassett and Lt Cdr Andrew Robinson but on this occasion not wearing the Senior Service’s uniform.
Lt Cdr Robinson wore his ceremonial robes as the Chief Executive of the Diocese of Winchester while Captain Nigel Bassett was also present in his civilian capacity as a Master Mariner and Senior Marine Pilot in Southampton Port.
The Princess Royal read the lesson at the cathedral while the Evening Service of Dedication was conducted by the Bishop of Southampton, the Right Reverend Jonathan Frost by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter of Winchester.
Also on parade were the Red and Blue Ensigns of the Merchant Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, HM Coastguard, and Army Ensign worn by Her Majesty’s Army vessels.
The National Ensigns were received by The Very Reverend James Atwell Dean of Winchester.
The Royal Naval Association, the Association of WRNS, the Royal Marines Association and Merchant Navy Association carried their Standards.
Cadets from the Southampton, Winchester and Portsmouth units of the Sea Cadets Corps carried the flags of the Mission to Seafarers, the Apostleship of the Sea and the Sailors Society.
They also carried flags of Shipping companies and organisations associated with Southampton.
